Team Cross River Steals the Spotlight as Niger Delta Games 2026 Kicks Off in Benin City

The second edition of the Niger Delta Games officially kicked off in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, with a colourful and electrifying opening ceremony that celebrated the rich heritage of the region.

Culture, colour, valour, and strength—reminiscent of the Niger Delta spirit—were on full display as the nine participating states marched in with pride and excitement. Team Cross River stood out prominently, captivating the audience with a breathtaking showcase of culture and vibrant colours that reflected the proud traditions of the Cross River people.

Declaring the Games open, the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, urged all teams to compete in the true spirit of sportsmanship, unity, and fair play.

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Honourable Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, emphasized the importance of national unity and encouraged athletes to represent their states with patriotic zeal.

Also speaking, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, charged the athletes to build lasting relationships and uphold the virtues of sportsmanship both during and after the Games.

The Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr. Chinedu Ebie, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to continuously engaging Niger Delta youths through sports and other productive ventures.

The symbolic lighting of the Games torch was performed by former African Footballer of the Year, Victor Nosa Ikpeba, a proud son of the Niger Delta, marking the official commencement of the competition.

Meanwhile, football events have already begun in both the male and female categories. In the women’s event, Edo State recorded a commanding 5–0 victory over Akwa Ibom, while in the men’s category, Imo and Rivers settled for a thrilling 2–2 draw.

Action continues today across football and other sporting events as athletes battle for glory at the Niger Delta Games.
